Welcome to our 3d chat room options page.
3D has become a very broad term, with video games and with chat room systems, the term 3D can be applied to a multitude of graphic options, some of them basic 2-D drawings that have items that move around in a graphical user interface. There are also more “move all around the virtual world in all directions” kind of graphical interfaces available today. Sometimes when people are looking for 3D chat they are looking for the kind of 3D that you find when using special glasses and monitors or TVs to see a depth of field when viewing other people who are using 3-dimension webcams.
There are plenty of smaller sites that are offering basic 3D animated type of chat rooms where you control an “avatar” or cartoon like character who move around a kind of 2-D world.
Most of these applications are made in flash. Most of the basic flash chat rooms that offer some types of 3D avatar chat are more focused on the text chat that often comes in various “bubbles” above the character’s head. It’s a fun novelty that can add a little dimension and space to an otherwise basic text chat experience. more often I think when people hear and talk about 3D chat these days, they are generally referring to the newer “second Life”-like virtual worlds and 3 dimensional live webcam chat however.
Second Life is more than likely the largest 3D virtual chat world online, with the most regular users. With second life you can move all around a virtual world in 3D, or at least your “animated avatar” can.
You can modify your characters appearance to look very much like you, or virtually any kind of look you can imagine. There are costume shops and avatar shops that can customize you and your virtual space as much as you like. In the second life world most of these customizations are fueled by “linden dollars” – and you can buy these virtual credits with real money. There is much to the second life experience that would take up pages here to even begin to describe. I suggest checking out some youtube videos showing some of the second life world, characters movements, and more. If you have a decently powered computer that runs pretty fast, you can simply download the second life application for free, and in less than 15 minutes you can have your new avatar walking around in the vast virtual space and seeing other people as they meander through this large, “second life” virtual world.
The 3D webcam chat that some people have been talking about is relatively new to the general population. This technology has become widely available and very affordable pretty quickly. I have seen 3D web cams as low as $80. There are many options for finding people to engage in 3D chat these days. Of course there are many adult related sites that are started to promote these types of chat rooms as well. So make sure when you are surfing for 3D enabled chat, make sure you have some type of internet content filter so you don’t get into trouble with your work “acceptable computer use” policy, and make sure you are careful not violate any other acceptable use when searching for 3D enabled web sites, or web cam portals.
